Like all the storage areas in the Grand Design Imagine 2600RB, the pantry storage is an oversized hole behind doors! With limited fridge space, the amount of dry goods we purchased increased and we needed this large pantry to be functional and convenient.
Originally, I used plastic bins in the pantry stacked 2 deep on each shelf. This system quickly got old as I was required to remove the front bin to get to anything from the back. Having to take your pantry apart every time you need something was not working out!
With my home being on wheels and the earthquakes it experiences every time we move, I decided not to do shelves but pull out drawers instead. The drawers would allow for me to reach even the back items with ease and I would not have to worry about items falling over or rolling around during transport.
I chose 2 metal drawers with a solid rail system that I felt would hold up to the abuse of an RV pantry.
The only issue was there is a 1/2 inch lip on both shelves that would prevent the drawers from opening. I needed to raise the height of the entire drawer to allow for the rail to slide over the lip and extend completely open. An easy frame with pocket hole screws was custom made to fit perfectly inside the pantry to the exact dimensions needed to not only raise the drawer to the proper height, but also gave a solid base that could be secured down to the pantry. Once the frame was installed, the drawer was secured to the frame.
These two drawers did not add any extra space to the pantry but it did add functionality. I am now able to easily access everything in the pantry and the space itself is less chaotic. The bottom shelf currently holds our emergency drinking water and a few small non-pantry items. These items have not yet been needed and will stay where they are for now.
