Today I started working on my Unit. From the time I showed up to the time I clocked out, I ran all day long and I can honestly say I learned NOTHING! It is a very overwhelming feeling having every bit of important information thrown at you verbally and you better remember, because your on your own for the next case!
My Preceptor was great! She stepped in and tried to help look over my progress but she was also being pulled in every direction. All I can say is thank goodness I am a Travel Nurse in a department I have experience in! If all else failed, I resorted to my knowledge and skills from my previous job and that kept me moving forward.
The AMAZING thing, this department runs almost identical to the department I was previously employed at which is why I was able to figure things out as I went along! I felt comfortable on this unit all day despite the speed and not having a firm grasp of the paper charting! The processes from start to finish was familiar to me and that’s all I needed! Today we focused on the procedure room and tomorrow I will start preop/pacu but I feel comfortable that by the end of the week, I will be independent and a reliable nurse on this team! I don’t feel like a travel nurse, I feel like a new hire that they need to train as fast as possible!
