RV Ovens are notorious for uneven cooking and difficulty keeping correct temperatures! Some RV’s these days don’t even have ovens anymore because people opt for convection ovens/microwaves instead but if you are like me and have a rig with a traditional oven, there is still hope for your baking dreams!
After doing a little research, the solution was easy. The problem is in the position of the heating element and the lack of a fan to circulate the heat! With the heating element in the middle of the oven and the baking rack sitting directly above it, I needed to add something between the two that would absorb the heat and then disperse it with a wider surface area.
A Pizza Stone was made for exactly that! By simply adding a pizza stone directly on top of the heating element, my oven was able to cook more consistently and hold a temperature better than without it! By also adding an Oven Thermometer, I was able to get a more precise heat setting than following the degrees on the dial. We noticed that the dials were 50-75 degrees off from the true temperature when the pizza stone was in place.
With my additions of the pizza stone and oven thermometer, I have been able to bake chicken, pizzas, and even cookies in my RV oven without any problems! Now, this is not saying that a pizza stone solved all my problems, there is still a learning curve to how to cook in an RV Oven, but it did make it easier! More baking to come, but it will have to wait until winter! Just like in a house, the RV oven will heat your rig quick.
On travel days, I would recommend removing both the stone and the thermometer from the oven. Breaking a gas line by having things bouncing around is not a lesson you want to learn the hard way.
(Each RV Oven is different, so be sure to measure your oven when trying to find the right size stone!)
