In just a few weeks, we will be celebrating our first year in The Imagine. This past year has absolutely flown by and it is hard to believe all that we have experienced in such a short amount of time. But enough with the reminiscing for now, lets talk about the need for a new desk.
We love the layout and the compact size of our Home-on-Wheels but there was one modification that we knew would need to be done. The dinette would have to be converted into a desk, so that Chris could work comfortably from home.
We originally pulled out the dinette and replaced it with a homemade table and matching bench. With this table, there was still enough room to use a desk chair, but the space was very crowded. We originally thought that we would be able to keep the table clean, but with nowhere to put “Chris’ office” when not in use, the table top was always cluttered.
After a year of living with this setup, we finally found a solution that we think will work for both of us for years to come.
We bought an actual desk that would allow us to customize the width, depth, and height to fit our exact needs and space.
Facing the desk towards the window gave us a longer and shallower work station that would still allow for two people to sit side by side. This simple change in layout gives the illusion of having more space in the rig.
A Keyboard tray was an easy addition to the desk, allowing for both the keyboard and mouse to be hidden without having to actually put it away! By using metal hanging magazine racks, the laptops now have an easy access location for quick storage and retrieval. The key is to make putting the workstation away as easy as possible, in an effort to help encourage us to keep the desk clear of clutter when not in use.
The new desk and layout is a welcome change to the one area in the rig that gave us pause. By finding a solution, we are ready and excited to tackle another year of RV living, remote working, and travel nursing!
