It was another exhausting 48 hour work week here in Augusta. This week, I got a first hand glimpse into the life of nurses caring for Covid-19 patients.
I was deployed to the medical covid unit for my 8 hour float shift and can not begin to explain the hardships these nurses, techs, and support staffs are enduring. My initial reaction when I entered the unit was, “it is hot in here”. Being a closed unit, all doors, including the doors leading to the unit, must be kept closed at all times. There is absolutely no air circulation to help prevent the spread of the virus resulting in temperatures well above a comfortable levels. Add on a plastic gown, 2 pairs of surgical gloves, one N95 mask, one surgical mask, and a plastic face shield, and the temps are unbearable. Every task takes at least twice as long as they should, even for the smallest of chores. Taking a patient a cup of coffee can take upwards of 15 minutes and helping a patient to the bathroom can take over 45. Trying to find help to move a patient up in bed is nearly impossible in this over crowded and understaffed unit. But somehow, this unit and this team have endured these conditions for 5 months.
At the end of this long week, I was ready for our weekly Friday night Endo Traveler dinner! This week we went to an AMAZING Thai restaurant called Sawasdee Authentic Thai and Noodle House. This tiny restaurant gave us a meal to remember and some much needed down time to enjoy each others company.
With this being our last free weekend before we head back west, we were excited to escape to a near by city that I have never been to!
Savannah is a beautiful city with amazing history!
Like this beautiful water fountain! This fountain is famous and was erected in Forsyth park in 1858. It was ordered from a catalog, or at least thats what the tour guide said.
Between the historic buildings and the beautiful town squares, this city is perfect for a walking tour.
But, the best part of our entire trip… Leopolds Ice cream! Established in 1919, this is no ordinary ice cream shop!
This Ice cream shop was a blast from the past and our final stop in Savannah.
It was an amazing trip and definitely rejuvenated me for my final weeks here in Augusta.
Keep following along as I continue on this crazy amazing Travel Nurse Adventure!!
