This was a long and busy week!
First, I was notified that the hospital has given me a mid-contract raise in my hourly rate that would take effect starting next week and will last for the remainder of my contract. Although not expected, I am ecstatic to be recognized by this hospital for the work that I do!
Then, Watson and his abundance of never ending energy hurt his foot. After the longest vet visit ever, we found out it was just a bad sprain and nothing serious. By morning his limp was gone and he was ready to hit the trails.
This weekend we headed to Bisti Badlands! Another hidden local treasure that features formations that are unique to this area.
Unlike our previous hikes, this one was definitely a treasure hunt! Spread out over a 6.5 mile loop, this land transformed from dry river beds, to hoodoos, to the most spectacular rock formations, to a petrified forest, and lastly, the biggest Eagles nest I have ever seen!
Watson, once again, led the way through this mysterious landscape and showed no signs of slowing down after the previous days injury.
The Hoodoos here stand guard on top of the ridge line. Climbing to the top gave us a view of the vastness of the formations that we now stood amongst.
From the top, the whole landscape changed. Surrounded by Hoodoos, the path led us in and around the formations before bringing us to the cliffs edge.
Around every turn, there were new and uniquely beautiful formations waiting to be discovered.
The “Broken Eggs” were singularly spectacular!! Their unparalleled texture and coloring is, by far, my most favorite discovery while here in New Mexico!
From every angle, the eggs looked as if they were moving. As if capturing the ripples in time, they are forever changing.
But then the landscape changed and evidence of an ancient forest was the focus of our attention.
Whole logs littered the ground and were so perfectly preserved. Is this where these ancient trees fell or did the power of what was once a mighty river carry them down stream from their original resting place?
From one incredible discovery to another… there was one last treasure to find! When the map said “Eagles nest” as a landmark location, I was not expecting an actual Eagles Nest! Do you see it, there on the ledge? It is made of brush that can be found around the rivers edge and is absolutely massive. Even from far below, you can see and appreciate the shear size of the nest that is so perfectly perched.
Bisti Badlands was not what I had expected but was full of riches beyond my imagination.
Plans for our next weeks adventure are still undecided but I have no doubt that no matter where this adventure takes us next, it will be just as grand as the last!!
Keep Following along every Sunday to see where this crazy amazing Travel nurse adventure takes me next!!
