With more snow and rain that we would have liked this week, my plans for this weekends hike would have to be put on hold! Instead, I decided to take us to a popular tourist location that I knew would not lead us down any dirt or snow covered roads! We headed south and found ourselves in Albuquerque!
Petroglyph National Monument
I chose the Rinconada Canyon hike which was said to feature the most Petroglyphs in one small area than anywhere else in the park. The hike was a short 2.4 miles, but was packed with history!
It is so hard to describe this adventure except to say it was a true treasure hunt! The Petroglyphs were not marked and not always easy to see. I had to keep my eyes peeled and my imagination running as I hiked along the volcanic rocks that hid the stories of the past!
I want to take you on this adventure just as I saw it!
Can you find the Humming Bird? Look closely!
Here is the Humming Bird zoomed in!!
The Humming Bird was one of my favorite finds of the day, but what I am calling “The Dancing Alien” was a close second! Do you see him?
The color of the markings was incredibly faint on some, but from the right angle, all was revealed!
Here is another one. Can you find “The Cute Alien”?
Yep, this one is a bit easier to see and was a lot closer to the trail!
We had so much fun hunting and searching for the over 20,000 petroglyphs that reside in this canyon. Their history dates back to 1300 AD and were created by the Ancient Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers. History is literally written on the walls with each petroglyph telling its own story!
2.4 miles never took us so long to hike!! Two hours after starting our adventure, we finally made it back to the start completely in awe of what we just experienced!
This was the perfect place to spend what would have been a rainy, snowy, cold Saturday back in Farmington.
Next week marks halfway in this contract and fingers crossed for warmer, dryer weather to return! Keep following along every Sunday to see where this crazy amazing Travel Nurse adventure takes me next!
