With the halfway mark in this contract behind me, I decided it was time for a little change of scenery! This week, we fled the desert and headed north to Colorado! Before the hike even started, Chris got so excited that he twisted his ankle but, that didn’t stop him from finishing what we started!
The Canyons of the Ancients
What a beautiful place! With the Ute Mountains standing guard across the way, this Red Cliff Rock was a stark contrast to the snowy mountain tops in the distance.
Only a mile into the hike, we saw the first signs of why this place is so special. Cliff Dwellings tucked into the Canyon walls were hidden behind every corner.
Created by the ancient Pueblo People, their presence here will forever be remember. This is not just a dwelling, but a home to those who came before us.
Mile after mile, we walked deeper into the canyon. Snow and mud covered the trail and finally led us to the two story Dwelling.
From across the valley, I could see that the size of the dwelling was massive compared to the others. Evidence of what is now a dry waterfall was right next door. I can only imagine a time when the waterfall fills the dry river bed and brings this landscape to life!
Canyon of the Ancients-Sand Canyon Trail continued on but this was where our journey ended. Our first hike in Colorado was amazing and I know there is so much more to come!
Keep following along every Sunday to see where this crazy amazing Travel Nursing adventure takes me next!
