After 2 years of Full-Time RV living, we have felt fortunate that all of our repairs to The Imagine have been minor. Everything from replacing the power converter, repairing water leaks, replacing drawer rails, changing out the kitchen and bathroom faucets, replacing the metal skirting after tire blowout damage, and now the water pump has been done by us.
After returning back to home base this spring, we found that the water pump was no longer working. Although the water pump was making noice (the motor was trying), it couldn’t create a seal to function properly. There was a lot of forum talk about taking apart the pump, cleaning all the working components along with the seal and trying it again. This was an option but knowing the life of these pumps was 2-3 years on average, we decided to just replace the pump all together.
When looking for a replacement pump, we had options. We could buy an expensive one with better reviews, provided higher water pressure, and was said to be quieter… but in the end, we just wanted the “easy” route and decided to buy the exact same pump, a SHURflo 12v 3.0 GPM Revolution RV Water Pump # 4008-101-A65, to replace the old one with.
Our logic in this decision was that:
- It would fit in the exact same spot without modifications
- we could simply disconnect and reconnect without having to modify the waterlines or electrical cables
- same model pump meant it would be less expensive
We hit the nail on the head with our decision and the pump replacement was easy!! The hardest part was working in such a small, confined space. Our water pump is located under our kitchen counter with the only access being through a drawer.
Now, I said there was no modifying of waterlines or electrical, but thats not completely true. There was one electrical cable that had to be spliced but that is a simple task. We actually added a quick connect to the spliced ends so that in the future, no splicing needed! Other than that, it was a remove from the old- attach to the new kind of job.
Here is the best part… The new pump is far superior to the old one. We never realized that the original pump was defective from the get-go. The original pump had horrible water pressure, it pulsated and never gave a steady flow and was insanely loud, but all of this was normal to us because we never knew any different. The new water pump is every bit opposite of the old! We had no idea that we were actually upgrading our rig even with the purchase of the exact same pump.
“Repairs” is the biggest complaint of almost every RV owner, but, I am here to tell you that it is not as bad as some make it out to be. Yes, you will be making a lot of repairs when owning or living in an RV but these repairs, although time consuming, are usually simple. We definitely keep the “we can fix this” mindset and take every repair one day at a time.
