After yet another difficult week that hit me hard emotionally and missing out on an adventure getaway last weekend, I was ready for one of the biggest hikes planned for this contract.
Hunter Creek Falls Trail.
Hidden in the hills that surround the city, this hike took us on a vertical climb to a summit finish!
We started our adventure at 5:20 AM, and were determined to outrun the sun!
The hike started out in the classic Nevada desert. Desert brush, dust, and sharp rocks surround the trail as we made our climb through and around this canyon.
The wild flowers were just beautiful and lined our path as if leading the way.
Once the sunrise finally found us, the heat was instant and the once cool breeze turned hot and dry. Although the sun found us halfway through the hike, the canyon valley was still shaded and the break from the suns relentless rays was welcome!
After 2 miles, we left behind the deserts cliff edge and found ourselves walking straight into an enchanted forest. The sounds of birds, beautiful wildflowers and natural springs filled our sense and gave wonder as to how this place survives in the harshness of its surrounding landscape.
Over 3 miles from the starting point and after hours of climbing, the waterfall did not disappoint!
You could almost forget the we are actually standing in the middle of the endless desert!
After taking some time to rest and enjoy this grand payoff, it was time to leave this oasis behind and head back to the truck.
Although the sun was on full display on our return journey, the views were just as spectacular as ever!
And after over 6 miles of hiking, we made it back to the trailhead! Looking back, this hike was definitely one to remember! The desert, the forest, the waterfall… it was perfect!
Next week, I will hit my halfway mark on this contract and I am excited to cross that milestone! I continue to look for new hikes and adventures and I have a few unique experiences left to explore and share! So, keep following along as I continue to share this crazy, amazing, and sometimes difficult Travel Nurse Adventure!
