These last 2 years of Full Time RV Living have not been without its problems! I think of the Super Duty and the Imagine as a single unit and I often refer to the truck as an extension of my RV home. It was only a few weeks into this lifestyle that we encountered our first problem- a broken drawer rail that resulted in a broken water line. Since then, we have become serious amateur electricians, plumbers, and builders fixing everything that has broken ourselves! Over time, our emergency repair kit has grown to include things to make a quick repair or items that we can use to hold us over until we can make a repair. We have a few essentials that we now keep on hand and this past weekend, we added a new item to our repair kit!
After filling up with diesel in the Super Duty, we did our usual walk-around to give the truck a quick inspection. Right away, Chris found a nail in the passenger side front tire. After checking the TMPS in the truck, the air was lower than the driver side tire, but not enough to make me even think that we had a problem. We safely made it home and knowing that we had a spare if needed, we decided to pull the nail out and see if it even puncture the tire or just stuck in the tread. The nail was super short and for a second, we thought we got lucky. After applying bubble water to the hole, we realized that we did have the tiniest leak… I mean, I could have driven on it for at least a couple days at the rate it was leaking. Having recently needed to plug a hole in the golf cart tire before we left for Reno, we had bought a tire plug kit and put it in the tool box.
A Tire Plug Kit is now a must have essential in our emergency kit! We were able to plug the leak right away. No canceling our weekend adventure to take the truck to a tire shop! But even more so, what if we found the nail during a travel day? The stress and anxiety of having to delay our progress to find a tire shop who could help us out. If we were in the middle of New Mexico or South Dakota… Rest stops are few and far between! We would be changing a tire on the side of the highway, which after changing The Imagine’s tire, I’m traumatized for life! I am not sure why I never kept a kit in my vehicle before, but now, I know that I should never drive without one!
In addition to the plug kit, the Viair RV Air Compressor ! We have had the Viair since day one of our RV life adventure and it has saved us time and time again! The Imagine’s tire blowout, our top offs at the beginning of each travel day, and now the Nail… the Viair is worth its weight in gold!
Two absolute essentials for anyone who drives a vehicle!
