With every adventure we take, I have learned to simply enjoy the moment! Be flexible, spontaneous, and most importantly, ask the local kids what they are looking for while playing in a pile of silt! It never fails to amaze me how often my planned days turn into something completely unexpected and those are the memories that stand out the most when reminiscing.
Although the buried treasures (sharks teeth) we found at New Bern Battlefield was a highlight moment, the battlefield itself was full of history.
New Bern not only sits on the Neuse River that connects to the Atlantic Ocean, but the north-south rail lines of the Atlantic and Carolina Railway also made New Bern a strategic military location. The Union army found success in their quest to gain control of the area and the Battle of New Bern will never be forgotten.
These types of historical sites are always so quiet to me. The history, the lives that were touched and lost here… it never fails to make me appreciate both sides of the story.
The history of New Bern is fascinating and sheds light on small but powerful truths about a past that has scarred our country deeply! Schools teach the civil war as if it was literally and figuratively “black and white” but, the truth is… there are some parts of our history that are a little more ”grey”. Seeking truth about our history as ”Americans” is something I have always found important and that truth is brought to life when visiting places like the New Bern battlefield.
With its fascinating history, cool morning and warm days, and beautiful location, New Bern is truly full of endless treasures!
And Alpacas… Super cute, cuddly, soft Alpacas!!!
After an awesome 4 days exploring this fascinating city and catching up with long lost friends, it was time to continue on our journey. A quick stop in Augusta, Ga gave us a chance to visit with Chris’ family and take a few days to relax before finishing off this adventure and heading home.
I am excited to be back at The Barn for a little while! I am already planning my next adventure but for now, I am just happy to be home and with my parents and family for the holidays!
Thank you for following along and for the support during this life changing season. My reason for traveling has changed and I can’t wait to see where this new found freedom takes me… and of course, document all my adventures along the way!
